Brief History

The English Studies Program (Program Studi Sastra Inggris) of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (Fakultas Ilmu Budaya) Universitas Padjadjaran was established in 1958 as one of the first programs to be offered the, then, Faculty of Arts (Fakultas Sastra). The program in its early years was greatly indebted to volunteers from overseas who served as lecturers. Over the years the program has evolved, developed, and grew into a reputable site for English studies in Indonesia, particularly in the study of the English language, the teaching of English as a foreign language, and literature in English. It has become one of most sought-after programs in the field in Indonesia by high-school graduates and by those from equivalent level schools of secondary-education (vocational schools and madrasas aliya). At present, the program is accredited “A” by the National Accreditation Board of Indonesia.
